I am an artist who studied English and Art History, Art Gallery and Museum Studies, then a further Art degree before working in museums, archives and libraries. I find the idea of narrative fascinating; stories are everywhere and form the basis of so much in art. I consider this a key aspect of working from observation. Narrative and preservation – storytelling and memory are freqent underlying themes of what I do. That and the love of art history history, literature and my own rural surroundings. I enjoy painting in oils and am an enthusiastic portrait painter. I have exhibited large works on canvas with the Society of Equestrian Artists, and a theme of equestrian subjects runs through my work in oils. I am a keen print-maker using a variety of approaches, particularly wood-engraving, drypoint and letterpress techniques. I prepare wood blocks for engraving from blanks and find developing a concept from 'raw' wood to finished print lends an inspiring feel of complete immersion in the process. I enjoy the illustrative quality of wood-engraving, as small-scale impressions conveyed through rhythmic, patterned marks has a fascinating stylistic history. My enthusiasm for letterpress printing combines with wood engraving as I write and connect illustrations in print form. I use drypoint to produce original pieces and to develop my landscape sketches into finished work. Alongside original work, I have built a specialism in animal portraiture. I began taking portrait commissions in 2012 and have produced works in oils, pastel, graphite and chalk and charcoal. I personally find chalk and charcoal to be the most satisfying medium and process, since the incredible scope of such a simple combination of mediums can be worked into highly effective results. I have a page on this site dedicated to letterpress stationary and personalised cards. At present I produce commissioned portrait cards with indiviual messages printed inside. I spend time making letterpress and relief print cards and tags which will be shown under the Letterpress tab. These include cards and tags for seasonal events and occasions. Thank-you for visiting my website, I hope it finds you well.
